Spring Water Festival
to feature Earl Thomas Conley

The Spring Water Committee recently announced that Williamston will celebrate 30 years of hosting a fun family oriented event when the annual festival is held in August and organizers plan to celebrate big with country music legend Earl Thomas Conley.

Conley, who has 18 number one hits spanning his 30-plus year career, will headline the entertainment on Saturday evening, capping two days of fun activities.

Conley’s career, which featured early hits such as “Fire and Smoke” and “Holding Her & Loving You,” took off about the same time the first Spring Water Festival was organized and held in 1981.

He had multiple Grammy nominations for the 1983 hit “Holding Her & Loving You,” which won the “Country Song of the Year” award.

The album on which that song appeared, “Don’t Make it Easy on Me” was the first in any genre to have four number one hits on it, pre-dateing a similar feat achieved with Michael Jackson’s “Bad” album.

Through the 1980s and ’90s, Conley led the country music charts with a string of hits.

He was the only country artist to appear on the popular Rhythm and Blues TV show “Soul Train,” singing the 1986 hit duet “Too Many Times” with Anita Pointer He also had a hit duet in 1987 with another country star, Keith Whitley, with the song “Brotherly Love.”

Other number one hits included “Your Love’s on the Line”, “Once in a Blue Moon”, “I Can’t Win for Losing You” and many more.

Early in his career, two of Conley’s songs, “Smokey Mountain Memories” and “This Time I’ve Hurt Her More Than She Love Me” were number one hits for Mel Street and Conway Twitty in 1975. Both songs were recorded by Conley on later albums.

“We are very proud and excited to announce that Earl Thomas Conley will be entertaining at the 30th Annual Spring Water Festival,” Festival Chairman David Meade said. “During the time Conley’s musical career was taking off, Williamston’s Spring Water Festival was also growing in recognition as one of the premier festivals in the Upstate.”

The reputation has continued to this day.

The festival began expanding the musical entertainment several years ago and has featured a mix of professional and local artists and musicians that are comparable to many larger festivals.

“With the support shown by The Town of Williamston, we have been able to bring top Nashville performers, along with excellent local and regional entertainment to our festival,” Meade said.

Organizers say the 2011 Spring Water Festival will build on the success of their first two day festival held last year.

Festival entertainment will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26 with a shag contest and Beach Music by the Out of Towners Band.

On Saturday, music on the amphitheater stage will feature performances by local singer Hannah Canille Rogers who recently recorded a CD in Nashville, Tennessee. Rogers will be appearing with Georgia singer/songwriter Rex Norton, who will also be performing songs from his CD and new songs that will be on an upcoming CD.

Also appearing during the day will be Odyssey, the Royal Scotsmen Band and Angela Easterling and the Beguilers.

Lots of other entertainment will be offered throughout the day including an all day gospel stage featuring 2 For 1, Cindy Gilliam, Duane Caple, Living Truth, All for Him, Epps Family, Mechelle Smith, Centurions, Echos of Mercy, and Catlin Tierce & Eagleheart.

There will also be special children’s entertainment. The Children’s stage will feature performances by Canadian Quarter, the Mt. Zion Church Praise Team and Janie Turner. There will be demonstrations by Chad Allen Karate Fight Club, Slamming Sammy’s Gym and Jack’s Drum Shack. The Mill Town Players and Zipper the Clown will also entertain.

The festival celebrates the founding of the town around the mineral spring which reportedly had medicinal qualities. The Spring Water Festival  offers more than 50 crafters, festival food and a variety of other special activites.

The 5K Spring Water Run will feature more than 200 runners on a registered course. Entry fee is $15 in advance or $20 on the day of the race. Registration forms are available in advance at The Journal and online at www.springwaterfestival.com and at strictlyrunning.com.
